Can it really be love? How is our organic fair trade decaf decaffeinated?
Our Beaufort 1 is decaffeinated using supercritical CO2.
This is one of the two methods permitted for organic coffees, as CO2 is already naturally present in roasted coffee. This method hardly alters the aroma but effectively removes the caffeine. In this gentle and completely safe process, the coffee beans are first prepared with steam in a pressure chamber and then rinsed with liquid, supercritical CO2 under pressure between 73 and 300 bar.
The carbonic acid formed from water and CO2 dissolves the caffeine contained in the beans; the CO2 then evaporates completely during the drying of the beans. It can be condensed and reused.
Only after the coffee beans have been decaffeinated are they roasted – just like regular, caffeinated beans. All the components that contribute to and determine the later taste and aroma of the roasted coffee are almost completely preserved in the carbon dioxide process. Bitter and irritating substances, on the other hand, are significantly reduced, making decaffeinated, caffeine-free coffee easier to digest. This process is the most complex method for removing caffeine from coffee beans and results in a very aromatic coffee.
The residual caffeine content of our Beaufort 1 is less than 0.1%. This, and the knowledge that this process is completely chemical-free, will let you sleep like a baby after enjoying our fine and light Peruvian single origin coffee 😉☕ And yes, it can 😉
